January Split-the-Plate Partner: West Alabama Food Bank

Alabama has one of the highest poverty rates in the country. West Alabama Food Bank (WAFB) was incorporated in 1987 as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to help alleviate hunger and food insecurity in nine West Alabama counties. The counties served are Bibb, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Sumter, and Tuscaloosa. WAFB collects surplus and salvageable food and distributes it to agencies serving a population of more than 315,000 residents.
Some of their basic programs of WAFB include:
 Basic agency warehouse shopping program
 Pre-order system – agency pickup/self-delivery
 USDA commodity program
 Salvage program
 Value-added product program
 Community service worker program
 Brown Box program for needy elderly
 Mobile Food Pantry & Mini-Mobile Pantry
 Secret Meals/Backpack Meals for hungry children
 Fifth Quarter
 Beat Hunger
